BLACKTOP

The high school group I teach rehearses on a blacktop "field" during the late summer and fall. The other day during rehearsal I looked down and saw these oil stains that reminded me of something you'd see in outer space...

RAINBOW

One of the local car washes I go to is called Rainbow and has this groovy signage. I've always loved it. Plus, they do a great job cleaning my car inside AND out!

INSIDE JOKES

Many of the products from Veer are inside jokes for graphic designers...

I love this Kern hoodie and Lorem Ipsum tshirt. For those that don't know, to kern is to adjust the space between two letters of a word. Lorem Ipsum are the first two words of Latin text that graphic designers use as a placeholder when the real copy hasn't yet been written.

UPDATE

Coming soon to Kitsch Café...

AFTERNOON LIGHT

I was quietly sitting on the couch, knitting the other day and looked up and noticed the afternoon light streaming into my apartment...

I love late afternoon light. Especially when it's diffused. I think it reminds me of when I lived in London. The further north you are, the less intense the light is. There's something about the weak light that make me nostalgic.

TYPOWALLS

I love this new wall decal from Veer...

Perfect for graphic design firms or anybody that likes type.

COLORSTROLOGY

Found via Cardboard Sea, Pantone's Colorstrology claims that "a color reflects the very essence of your specific birth date."

I'm not sure I really believe in this as it's basically a marketing ploy for Pantone, but it's fun nonetheless...

ANIMAL HEADS

Animal heads used as trophies are pretty gross. But, I have to admit, they are sort of cool, too. So, the next best thing are these cardboard versions from Veer...

I like the moose version the best. Makes me laugh!

SMILEY

My mother and father are always amazed at my creativity and wonder where I got my visual and artistic talents. I don't understand why they think this , as it's clearly from them... My father's career as a surgeon was based on using his hands, and my mom has knitted on and off for over 40 years while making many a fashion statement. My eye comes from my mother and was sharpened growing up in a smartly decorated mid century house they bought from the original owners.

You can imagine that I was not shocked when an email from my father arrived with this image attached...

Yes, that's an old satellite dish that he painted and stuck in the landscaping. (I'm wondering if my mom had any prior knowledge... my guess is no.)

YARD SALE

A long time thrifter, I'd never been to the World's Longest Yard Sale, which passes through Cincinnati. I've never really been in to garage and yard sales. They are sort of hit or miss. Actually, they are more miss than hit, in my experience.

However, since it was such a nice day, Blake and I decided to head out to check it out. Fueled by large lattes, we had a good time. My attention span didn't last that long, however, and after about two hours we left. (Unlike some other people that are turning it into a huge multiple day event.)

I did find some cool stuff for my Etsy shop...

MUST. TAKE. PHOTO.

Blake is always making fun of me for stopping and photographing things on the ground...

I can't help it. It's the graphic designer in me.

I found this cool wallpaper and door the other night while out with Blake. The door is a back entrance to the Cincinnati branch of Urban Outfitters.

STYLIST?

Maybe I should begin a new career as a prop stylist...

Update
choosing the backgrounds are part of the fun | click to enlarge

I'm having loads of fun taking photos for my Etsy shop. I've learned that I need to be in the mood, though. I can't force it. If I do, I usually end up with something less than inspiring. Today, though, was not one of those days. The ideas seemed to flow very easily. I'm learning how to pick better props and even when to not have props. Now only if marketing my shop were this easy...
